An unemployed rocket scientist posing as a mad scientist to avoid being ripped limb from limb as he exercises his last chance to go into space before the earth is drained of rocket fuel and he is earthbound forever. Cid has loved the moon since he was a small child and never goes anywhere without his beloved antique moon rock from the original moon gift shop Planet Paradise.
Arrested for repeated public disturbances, Chuck is a passionate poet who switches back and forth from the group’s chill and level-headed leader to an angry whirlwind with a fixation on flipping things at the drop of a hat.
A childish kleptomaniac, Sam is almost euphoric living on the moon in the company of his new group of friends and his compulsion to steal has almost completely vanished. He genuinely loves and respects each member of the group but especially craves the acceptance of Dieter, whose cool nonchalance he admires.
Nobody knows how many men Dieter has killed but the story of “the guy he killed” changes with every telling. Dieter is moody, prone to skepticism and usually keeps to himself. Although he is often annoyed by Sam, he would protect him at all costs. Back on earth, Dieter was a semi-popular painter who worked with themes of death, time and futility, mixing stark realism with cartoony graphic elements.
A pyromaniac arsonist that has trouble coming to terms with his own mediocrity. When he isn’t musing about fire and failing attempts to ignite a lighter in space, he is angrily contemplating how to show Earth once and for all that he is an indispensable member of society. For now he clings to the fact that he is Chuck’s best friend and therefore an unofficial second in command.
Cid’s long time best friend and NASA (iNternational Aeronautics and Space Association) scientist. Remy and Cid have been inseparable since Cid’s recruitment ten years ago. Cid’s perpetual advancement within the company has been a slight irritant in their friendship, but the fact that they’re both bachelors working exceedingly long hours has kept their relationship indispensable. Remy’s most famous invention are pressure control oxygen helmets (backward engineered from a scrap of alien technology) which allow the wearer to travel in space in their street clothes without freezing or exploding. The invention was hardly celebrated though since the short supply of rocket fuel has slowed space travel to a trickle.
Stanley and Trent
The only two members of the Black Bar Task Force, a crack team responsible for the upkeep and deployment of ‘Ol’ Chasteful’, a giant black bar mounted on a satellite. When raised to just the right level, Ol’ Chasteful can successfully censor crude words and images painted on the surface of the moon by convicts.
